
Cubs top Round Rock

The Iowa Cubs defeated the Round Rock Express 8-3 in front of 9,541 fans Friday night in the home opener of the 2009 season at Principal Park.
Starting pitcher Randy Wells struck out six Express batters over five innings of work to earn his first win of the season.
Round Rock took an early 2-1 lead heading into the second inning on Mark Saccomanno's RBI single and a bases-loaded walk.
Iowa went on an offensive tear in the second inning, posting four runs, to take a 5-2 lead. Andres Blanco singled to start the rally, and was driven in on Sam Fuld's triple. Bobby Scales doubled, one of three for him in the game, to drive in Fuld and later scored when Luis Rivas singled. Jake Fox, who has a hit in all of Iowa's games this season, hit an RBI single to continue the attack. Fox was 2-for-5 in the game with two runs batted in. The Cubs posted their fourth run in the inning when Jason Dubois hit an RBI double.
Edwin Maysonet of Round Rock, doubled in the third inning to cut the Cubs' lead, 5-3. Iowa plated another pair of runs in the fourth inning when Fox and Brad Snyder homered. It was Fox's fifth home run of the season.
The Cubs held Round Rock scoreless from the fourth inning on. Relievers Greg Reinhard and Kevin Hart combined for eight strikeouts in four innings, while each of Iowa's position players tallied a hit in the win.
The Cubs scored an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning when Scales and Rivas hit back-to-back doubles for the 8-3 finale. Scales went 3-for-4 with three doubles and an RBI. Blanco also posted a three-hit game. Iowa had six doubles in the game.
Round Rock's starting pitcher Josh Muecke was roughed up for 11 hits in five innings for the loss. The Cubs and Express play tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. at Principal Park.
