Daytona Tortugas News Release

DAYTONA BEACH, FL -- In front of a large crowd at Jackie Robinson Ballpark, the Daytona Cubs (11-19) took down the Clearwater Threshers (20-8) for the first time in 2010, 4-1. The Cubs got clutch hitting from a number of different players as all four of Daytona's runs came with two outs.

The Threshers threatened in the first inning as Anthony Gose led off the game with a triple. Cubs starter (1-1) settled in though and struck out the side to strand Gose at third. This marked the first time in six games against Clearwater that the Threshers did not score in the first inning.

Daytona took their first lead of 2010 over Clearwater with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Ryan Flaherty drew a two-out walk from Threshers starter J.C. Ramirez (3-2). First baseman Rebel Ridling followed with a double off the top of the right field wall to plate Flaherty.

The Cubs made it 2-0 in the fourth inning. Flaherty led off the frame with a double to left field. Ramirez got the next two Cubs batters on strike outs, but shortstop DJ LeMahieu came through with a double down the right field line for his first of two RBI on the night.

The Cubs would score another run in the fifth inning as Cubs RBI-leader David Macias singled in Smailey Borges. Borges was hit by a pitch with one out.

Daytona made it a 4-0 lead in the sixth inning as the Cubs strung together four straight hits. Ridling started it with a single to center field, but was caught stealing for the second out. Kyler Burke then smacked his second triple of the season into the right field corner. LeMahieu brought in Burke with a single to center for his 14th RBI of the year. Catcher Michael Brenly would single to keep the inning alive, but Nelson Perez flew out to end the threat.

The Threshers would get one in the eighth off Chris Siegfried, but that would be it for the powerful Clearwater offense. Siegfried worked three solid innings out of the pen before he gave way to Oswaldo Martinez. The Mexican-native worked a one-two-three ninth for his second save of the year.

Archer went five scoreless innings and racked up a season-high seven strikeouts on the night. Ramirez went deep into the ball game as he worked seven innings, but took the loss for Clearwater.

The Cubs will have Sunday off before they head south for four games against the Bradenton Marauders starting on Monday. You can catch all of the action on AM 1340 WROD or online at www.daytonacubs.com.
