Portland Beavers News Release
PORTLAND, Ore. - Top prospect Felix Pie drove in two runs, and J.R. Mathes struck out seven in six strong innings to lead the Iowa Cubs to a 4-1 victory over the Portland Beavers before 8,018 at PGE Park Thursday night.
Geovany Soto and Micah Hoffpauir each had two hits and an RBI for the Cubs (31-22), who took a 2-1 lead in the series that concludes Friday night at PGE Park.
Ray Chang hit his second home run and had three of Portland's six hits.
Mathes (5-3) gave up one run, four hits and two walks to win for the third time in his last four starts. Clay Rapada stopped the Beavers (24-29) in the ninth to get his seventh save.
Ryan Ketcher (0-6) was again the victim of a lack of run support. The Beavers have scored a total of just eight runs in the six losses sustained by Ketchner, who gave up two runs and struck out four over seven innings against the Cubs.
Chang lifted a solo home run to left to start the scoring in the second.
With two outs in the fifth, Pie gave the Cubs the lead with a single to center field that scored Hoffpauir and Scott Moore.
In the eighth, the Cubs added two runs on a sacrifice fly to center from Soto and an RBI single by Hoffpauir.
Pie and Moore each had two hits as part of Iowa's 11-hit effort.
The Beavers conclude their series with the Cubs Friday night at 7:05 p.m.
NOTES: The Cubs had two runners thrown out at home in the game ... outfielder Mike Sansoe and Josh Howard made exceptional catches to rob the Cubs of potential extra-base hits in the fourth ... the Beavers have homered in 11 straight games ... the Padres claimed outfielder Hiram Bocachica off waivers from Oakland. Bocachica is expected to join the Padres in Washington when they begin a three-game series with the Nationals on Friday ... the Beavers announced that Bob Leroy Head from Maquoketa, Iowa, was the winner of their national search for their Esurance Bob L.
