Iowa Cubs News Release
DES MOINES, IA - Ty Wright belted a two-run blast in the eighth inning propelling Iowa to a 5-4 win over the Sounds, snapping the club's six-game losing streak in the series opener at Principal Park tonight.
Cubs' starter Chris Volstad (2-0) got a no decision despite throwing his second quality start as an Iowa Cub. The 6-foot-8, right-hander allowed four runs, three earned, off eight hits while striking out seven in seven innings of work. Jeff Beliveau (2-3) picked up the win, pitching two innings of scoreless relief. Scott Maine record his fourth save of the season, closing the game out with a hitless ninth.
The Sounds were first to get on the board, when a Jason Jaramillo bloop single to center drove in former major leaguer Jay Gibbons in the Nashville half of the second inning.
An RBI-double from Dave Sappelt that scored Josh Vitters, who walked earlier in the inning, evened up the score in the home half of the second.
Volstad helped his own cause with a leadoff single to start the third inning, and advanced to third base on a Brett Jackson double. Anthony Rizzo, who extended his hit streak to five games with a single in the second, reached on a fielder's choice two batters later driving in Volstad and advancing Jackson to third. Vitters knocked in Jackson with a double to left-center field tallying the Cubs' final run of the inning.
Logan Schafer led off the Nashville sixth with a bunt-single. Jordan Brown followed with what was originally called a double high off the wall in left, before being reversed by the umpires to a home run tying the game. Iowa skipper Dave Bialas was ejected arguing the reversed call.
The Sounds regained the lead in the seventh off two doubles from Caleb Gindl, pinch hitting for Peralta, and Jeff Bianchi making the score 4-3. Nashville went quietly in eighth in ninth innings, ending the Cubs' winless draught. Josh Vitters and Dave Sappelt finished with a multi-hit game, knocking two hits each.
The Cubs and Sounds will meet for the first of two days of doubleheaders at Principal Park tomorrow night with the first game starting at 5:00 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on AM 940 with the On Deck Circle Pre-Game Show starting at 4:30 p.m.
