CLEARWATER, FL- The Daytona Cubs (9-13) fought hard, but fell for the fifth straight time as they lost in 13 innings to the Clearwater Threshers (13-9), 4-3.

The Cubs struck quickly in the first. Cubs second baseman Nate Samson drew a walk from Threshers starter Carlos Monasterios and would come around to score on a double off the bat of third baseman Jovan Rosa.

The Threshers answered with a run of their own in the second inning off Cubs starter Dan McDaniel. Third Baseman Yonderman Rodriguez singled and promptly stole second base off of McDaniel. Thresher second baseman Fidel Hernandez proceeded to drive home Rodriquez with a single to right field.

The score would stay at one a piece until the fifth inning. The Threshers put together a two out rally against McDaniel, when center fielder Javis Diaz singled in left fielder Arlon Quiroz who hit a double in the previous at bat.

The Cubs' bats would fight back and tie the game in the sixth. New Cub Jake Opitz led off the inning with a walk from Monasterios. On a wild pitch Opitz reached second base and then advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt off the bat of Samson.

With the infield in, Tyler Colvin singled home Samson on a ground ball through the middle which tied the game at two.

The Threshers again had an answer for the Cubs as in the bottom half of the sixth right fielder Dominic Brown led off with a home run to right field off Cubs reliever Craig Muschko.

Trailing 3-2 going to the 8th the Cubs would once again rally to tie the game. Tony Campana led off the inning with an infield single off of reliver Michael Schwimer. In the very next at bat Jake Opitz hit a double down the right field line, which scored Campana all the way from first.

The pitchers would take the game over from there as neither team could plate a run until the 13th inning.

Cubs reliever Henry Williamson (1-1) came into the game and gave up a lead off double to Brown. After a ground out and two intentional walks second baseman Fidel Hernandez came up with the game on the line.

Fernandez hit a line drive to centerfield, which was caught on the run by Tony Campana for the second out in the inning. Campana could not get the ball back in before Brown tagged up and scored to give the Threshers a 4-3 victory.

Zach Sterner (2-0) picked up the win in relief for the Threshers. The Cubs will try to salvage one game in the series tomorrow afternoon, first pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
