Palm Beach Cardinals News Release

Jupiter, FL - Anthony Garcia clubbed a three-run bomb in the fifth inning, Cesar Valera recorded three hits, but the Palm Beach Cardinals couldn't catch the Daytona Cubs, falling 9-6 on Monday night at Roger Dean Stadium. The Cubs have won both games in the current set and the Cards have now lost three straight.

Trailing 8-2 in the fifth inning, the Cardinals (21-9, 57-42) got big hits from Ildemaro Vargas, Luke Voit and Garcia. Vargas, who hit two doubles in the game, slapped his second of the two down the left field line to leadoff the frame. Voit drove Vargas home later in the inning with an RBI single up the middle to trim the Birds' deficit to 8-3.

David Popkins reached on an infield single to put two runners on for Garcia. The Cardinals left fielder then crushed a Jose Rosario pitch over the left field wall for his 10th homer of the year. The line drive missile off the bat of Garcia made it just a two run lead for the Cubs at 8-6.

The Cardinals wouldn't come any closer however, as the Cubs (18-11, 44-53) tacked on a run in the ninth inning and won 9-6.

Daytona used RBI hits from Dan Vogelbach and Billy McKinney in the first inning to jump out to a 3-0 lead on Silfredo Garcia and the Cardinals.

Palm Beach got two runs right back over the first two innings. Nick Martini and Vargas hit back-to-back doubles to start the first and put the Birds on the board, 3-1. Anthony Garcia, Valera and Gerwuins Velazco each singled in the third inning, resulting in the team's second run of the game. Velazco drove Garcia in to cut the Daytona lead to 3-2.

The Cubs touched home five more times before Silfredo Garcia's day was done. The Palm Beach right-hander was charged with eight runs on nine hits over five innings and took the loss. The two home runs and the eight runs surrendered by Garcia (6-2) were the most for him in a game this season.

Jordan Hankins hit a three-run home run in the fourth and Rock Shoulders notched a two-run shot in the fifth to help the Cubs build the 8-2 lead.

Michael Jensen tossed 2.2 scoreless innings in relief of Rosario. Jensen (5-4) fanned five and allowed just one hit to pick up the win. Starling Peralta chipped in two scoreless and three strikeouts to secure his second save of the season.

The two teams will play the third game of the four-game series on Tuesday night at Roger Dean Stadium. LH Jimmy Reed (3-0, 2.57) is expected to start for Palm Beach against LH Nathan Dorris (4-5, 4.99) for Daytona. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
