Cubs Erupt Late To Blow Out Sounds, 11-4

DES MOINES - The Nashville Sounds resumed play on a sour note following the All-Star break as the division-rival Iowa Cubs erupted for 11 runs in their final two trips to the plate en route to an 11-4 victory on Thursday evening at Principal Park.

The first-place Sounds (51-40) saw their division lead over the I-Cubs reduced to four games with the defeat.

Nashville grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning against Cubs starter Esmailin Caridad. Jason Bourgeois led off the frame with a single then stole second with two outs before scoring the contest's first run on Joe Koshansky's RBI single to right.

The Sounds upped the advantage to 4-0 with a three-run rally in the sixth. Left fielder Cole Gillespie led off with his seventh home run of the year, a solo shot to left off Caridad. Shortstop Johnny Raburn followed with a triple into the right field corner and scored on a Freddy Parejo single. Hernan Iribarren wrapped up the frame's scoring with a two-out RBI single to right.

Nashville starter Tim Dillard cruised through the first six innings, allowing only two hits, before Iowa got to him with a big rally in the bottom of the seventh, plating six runs to jump out to a 5-4 lead.

Iowa first baseman Matt Craig pulled the home team back within a run with one swing of the bat in the bottom of the seventh, drilling a three-run homer off Dillard. The blast, which made it a 4-3 contest, was the infielder's fourth roundtripper of the year.

A pair of errors on Sounds third baseman Adam Heether opened the door for the remainder of the scoring in the frame. The home team took its first lead of the night at 5-4 on Nate Spears' one-out, two-run single to left, which chased Dillard. Sounds reliever John Axford worked out of a one-out, bases-loaded jam with little damage as veteran outfielder So Taguchi provided an insurance run for Iowa with a sacrifice fly that increased the lead to 6-4.

The four-run lead held by Nashville in the contest was the largest blown by the club in a defeat all season.

The Cubs closed out the evening's scoring in the eighth with five two-out runs off Axford to put the game out of reach at 11-4. Matt Camp ripped an RBI triple before Spears added his second run-scoring knock of the night, a two-run double to left. Pinch-hitter Jason Dubois added a run-scoring double of his own before Taguchi plated the contest's final run with a single to right.

Iowa reliever Justin Berg (4-1) picked up the win after hurling a scoreless inning behind Caridad.

Greg Reinherd kept Nashville off the board in the eighth before Jason Waddell came on to work a scoreless ninth to secure the victory.

Dillard (9-4) took the loss for the Sounds after allowing six runs (three earned) on five hits over 6 1/3 innings of work.

The teams continue the series with another 7:05 p.m. matchup on Friday night. Nashville sends left-hander Chris Cody (3-4, 3,24) to the bump to face Iowa right-hander Jose Ascanio (2-1, 1.63).
