Omaha went 4-5 on a road trip to Oklahoma City and New Orleans prior to the All-Star break. It's another Thirsty Thursday! Enjoy $1 beers and Cokes, presented by 96.1 The Brew, Action 3 News and the City Weekly. Air time is 6:45 p.m. on Omaha's KOIL AM-1180 and at www.oroyals.com.
LAST NIGHT: The International League held off the Pacific Coast League's 9th inning rally to take a 6-5 victory in the Triple-A All-Star Game. Former KC Royal Esteban German had 3 hits and 4 RBI, with his 2-run homer in the 9th cutting the IL's lead to a run. German won the PCL Top Star Award, while Indianapolis' Erik Kratz doubled and homered to win the honors for the IL. Omaha's Dusty Hughes faced 1 batter in the 3rd inning, notching a strikeout on 3 pitches. The game was played before a sellout crowd of 16,637 at PGE Park in Portland, Oregon, the 3rd-biggest attendance in the 22-year history of the Triple-A All-Star Game and the largest since 1991.
LAST GAME: The Royals earned their 1st extra innings win of the season on Sunday at New Orleans, rallying for a 3-1 victory in 10 innings. Trailing 1-0 with 1 out in the 9th, Brian Buchanan's home run off Chris Mobley tied the game. Omaha scored 2 unearned runs off Mobley (2-1) in the 10th inning, as the Zephyrs committed 2 errors in the frame and the Royals delivered 2 sacrifice flies. Carlos Rosa (1-6) fired 2.0 hitless innings, striking out 3, to get the win. Doug Waechter also held the Z's without a hit over 2.0 frames.
ROYALS REPORT: Sunday's win was Omaha's 1st in 12 extra inning games this season. It also marked the Royals' 2nd straight comeback win over New Orleans and their 9th on the year. Prior to Sunday, the Royals were just 1-30 when trailing after 8 innings and 3-19 in games decided in the final at bat. *** With Sunday's win Omaha improved to 14-11 in day games. The Royals are 22-42 at night. *** Lenny DiNardo started on Sunday, giving up 1 run on 3 hits over 6.0 innings, walking 1 and notching 8 strikeouts, 1 shy of his season high. Over his last 3 starts, he's 1-0 with a 1.42 ERA, which has lowered his ERA from 3.79 to 3.30, 5th in the PCL. Over that span, he has walked only 3 while fanning 20. His 80 K's on the season rank 4th in the league. *** Omaha pitchers tied a season high Sunday by racking up 13 strikeouts. *** Before smacking the game-tying homer in the 9th inning Sunday, Buchanan had been 4-for-his-last-35 (.114) with 1 homer and 3 RBI. *** Over his past 20 games, Mario Lisson is batting .324 (24-for-74) with 4 homers and 9 RBI. *** Rosa is 1-0 with a 1.23 ERA and 1 save in 4 appearances this month, after posting a 3.18 ERA in June. It looks like his 10.43 ERA in May was an aberration. *** In his 5th rehab assignment outing Sunday, Waechter shaved his ERA with Omaha from 9.82 to 6.35. *** Irving Falu was 0-for-5 Sunday. Over his last 10 tilts, he's batting .154 (6-for-39), dropping his average 16 points to .257. However, he has only struck out 22 times in 346 plate appearances, ranking as the 6th-toughest batter to whiff among all full-season minor leaguers. *** Scott Thorman went 0-for-10 in the last 3 contests, dipping his average with the O-Royals 17 points to .298.
STARTERS: TBA vs. RH Kyle Davies (3-1, 1.88)
Davies makes his 5th start of the season with Omaha, his 2nd vs. Memphis. The 25-year old right-hander's last outing was at New Orleans last Friday, when he took the loss in a 6-2 defeat (5.0 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 2 BB, 5 K, 2 HR). Davies had won his 1st 3 Triple-A starts of the season, not allowing a run over his 1st 15.0 innings. In his 1st O-Royals start on June 25 at Memphis, Davies combined with Dusty Hughes on a 4-hitter in a 7-0 victory. Davies gave up 3 hits and a walk, while racking up 8 strikeouts, earning the PCL Pitcher of the Week award. He was optioned by KC on June 20, a day after giving up 8 runs (7 earned) on 9 hits over 2.2 innings vs. St. Louis and taking the loss in a 10-5 defeat. In 14 starts with KC, Davies is 3-7 with a 5.76 ERA. He's 3-4 with an 8.12 ERA at Kauffman Stadium, while going 0-3 despite posting a 3.26 ERA on the road. In 2008, Davies opened the year with Omaha and was 6-2 with a PCL-leading 2.06 ERA in 10 starts before being recalled by KC on May 31. He made his 2008 KC debut that night vs. Cleveland and helped the Royals end a 12-game losing skid with 5.0 innings of 1-run work, earning the win in a 4-2 victory. He went 3-0 with a 1.46 ERA in his 1st 4 starts. Davies wound up going 9-7 with a 4.06 ERA in 21 starts for KC, setting career bests in wins and ERA. He was 6-6 with a 3.66 ERA following the 2008 All-Star break, including a 4-1 mark and 2.27 ERA in September. Before that, he made a final start for Omaha on August 19, tossing 1.0 scoreless inning to finish with a 2.03 ERA at Triple-A. He faced Memphis once last season, getting the win on April 11 in a 6-2 victory at AutoZone Park. Davies was acquired by KC from the Atlanta Braves on July 31, 2007 in exchange for reliever Octavio Dotel. He made his KC debut on August 4, 2007 at Yankee Stadium, allowing 5 runs in 3.0 innings of a no-decision and yielding Alex Rodriguez' 500th career home run in the 1st inning. He made 11 starts in his 1st season with KC, going 3-7 with a 6.66 ERA. Davies pitched for Atlanta in parts of the 2005-07 seasons, after being named in 2004 as the Phil Niekro Award winner as the top pitcher in the Braves' organization. He was selected by the Braves in the 4th round of the 2001 draft out of Stockbridge High in Georgia.
