
Cubs Drop Regular Season Finale to Albuquerque

The Iowa Cubs dropped the season finale, 7-2, to the Albuquerque Isotopes in front of 8,720 people on a beautiful Labor Day at Principal Park. Iowa finished the season with a 72-72 record. The Cubs welcomed 536,872 fans into Principal Park during the 2009 season.
Matt Camp was 3-for-3 and scored Iowa's first run of the game in the fourth inning when he attempted to steal second base and ended up crossing home plate thanks to two Albuquerque errors.
The game was tied at one heading into the fifth inning, however the Isotopes broke away, scoring four runs. Scott Van Slyke walked and advanced to second on Tony Abreu's single. The pair then advanced another base on a throwing error by Iowa's starting pitcher Jeff Samardzija. Xavier Paul then scored the duo for a 3-1 lead. A home run off the bat of Mitch Jones gave the Isotopes a 5-1 advantage before the inning was over.
Albuquerque tacked on two more insurance runs in the seventh inning for a 7-1 lead. The Cubs added one more run when Darwin Barney doubled to drive in Steve Clevenger for the 7-2 final. So Taguchi collected two hits Monday. Iowa had two men on in the ninth inning, but Nate Spears grounded into a double play to end the threat.
Samardzija(6-6) was tagged with the loss, allowing five runs on seven hits over 4.2 innings of work. He struck out five batters and allowed one homer. Brent Leach (2-0) picked up the win for the Isotopes. Leach threw two scoreless innings to finish the game.
This season Iowa's J.R. Mathes posted 12 wins in the Pacific Coast League, good for third best overall. He also ranked 10th in the league with a 3.62 ERA. Prior to today's game the I-Cubs were second overall in the PCL in team pitching, posting a 4.12 ERA. Blake Parker's 22 saves with the I-Cubs are the fifth-most of anyone in the league. Despite being with Chicago since July 31, Sam Fuld is tied for third in the PCL with 10 triples.
