DAYTONA BEACH, Fla—The Palm Beach Cardinals must have thought they accidentally showed up at the Daytona International Airport on Saturday night, because in two games the Daytona Cubs sent out more non-stop flights than U.S. Airways.

Tattooing Cardinals pitching to the tune of 23 total runs on 27 hits including seven homeruns, Daytona never took their finger off the cruise control button and the Cubbies breezed through both games of the double-header winning by finals of 12-4 in Game 1 and 11-8 in Game 2.

The first contest was a continuation of the rain-suspended game that was halted on the morning hours of May 4 with the Cubs leading 9-0 in the bottom of the second inning. The Daytona sticks were a bit slow to heat up as the Cubs only mustered up three runs in the final seven frames off of Cardinals newcomer Justin Knoff, but the jump-start was more than enough to guide the Cubs to victory. Right-hander Juan Mateo (4-1) came in to start in the third and picked up the win despite surrendering four runs on seven hits in 3.2 innings of work.

In Game 2 the Cubs came out swinging and quickly took an 8-2 lead in the bottom half of the third inning as right-fielder J.J. Johnson capped off a five-run frame with a three-run homerun to give Daytona some breathing room. Righty Nate Sevier got the start for the Cubs and gave up five earned runs in 4. 1 innings, but Randy Wells (5-1) calmed the Palm Beach attack in 1.2 innings of work to notch the victory.

Overall, left fielder Kevin Collins led the offensive charge as the slugger belted three homeruns in 3-for-7 performance during the two contests. First baseman Matt Creighton also added a pair of Game 2 homers, and third baseman Scott Moore continued his white-hot streak in the month of June with a 3-for-7 night including a double, homerun and five RBI's.

With the victories, Daytona improved to 31-29 and remained in third place in the Florida State League Eastern Division, as the Cardinals dropped to 28-34 and held their position in fourth place in the East.

The two teams will meet up at Jackie Robinson Ballpark for another double-header on Sunday, as lefty J.R. Mathes (4-2, 3.10 ERA) will get the start in the first game, and Billy Petrick (1-4, 5.91 ERA) will take the mound for the second contest. Both games are scheduled for seven innings, and first pitch is set for 5:05 p.m. EST.
