Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
LAKELAND, FL (June 12, 2005) â The first half of the season started off so promising for the Fort Myers Miracle, jumping out to their best start in nearly a decade, but it all ended on Sunday night as they were mathematically eliminated in a 5-1 loss to the Lakeland Tigers.
The Miracle managed just two hits and didn't collect their first one until there was one out in the sixth inning. With Denard Span at first, after reaching on second baseman Juan Frnacia's error, JR Taylor hit a two hopper to second that took a bad hop over the head of Francia and went into right field. The next batter Matt Moses grounded out to first that scored Span and gave the Miracle their only run of the ballgame. The only other Miracle hit was an infield single to short by Ron Perodin in the eighth.
Tiger starter Randor Bierd was stellar going seven innings allowing one unearned run on one hit while walking one and striking out four to earn his first victory of the season.
The Tigers got on the board in the first on an RBI double by Kelly Hunt. They tacked on three more in the fourth on four consecutive hits. Derek Nicholson led off with a double to right. Garth McKinney followed with an RBI double. Eric Rodland's RBI triple scored McKinney and Danilo Sanchez singled home Rodlan. Sanchez added an RBI single in the sixth.
The Miracle bullpen of Tristan Crawford, Josh Gray and Chris Schutt pitched the final five innings allowing one run on six hits while walking three and striking out three.
With the victory the Tigers reduced their magic number to clinch the first half Western Division title to one.
The same two teams meet Monday morning at 11:05 a.m. The Miracle send RHP Scott Tyler (4-3, 4.58) to the hill against Tiger RHP, All-Star Nathan Bumstead (8-1, 2.93).
