Vancouver Canadians News Release

VANCOUVER, BC - A one-out broken bat single, a stolen base and an RBI double in the top of the ninth doomed the Canadians Wednesday night at The Nat in a 3-2 loss to the Everett AquaSox (Mariners).

Tied 2-2 after eight, Trent Tingelstad was sawed off by Will McAffer (L, 3-3) but still managed to muscle a weak pop-up just passed the second baseman to put the go-ahead run aboard. After pinch runner Cole Barr stole second, Mike Salvatore doubled him home to put Everett in front 3-2.

Garrett Spain nearly tied the game in the bottom of the ninth with a solo homer but settled for a two-out wall ball double that put the tying run in scoring position, but he was stranded there when the next batter popped out to end the game.

Vancouver scored single runs in the first and second to grab an early 2-0 advantage. Steward Berroa slapped the first pitch of the bottom of the first into left field for a single, went to second on a wild pitch, stole third then scored on a sacrifice fly from #6 Blue Jays prospect Leo Jimenez. In the second, Riley Tirotta was hit by a pitch, advanced to second on a ground out and showed off his high baseball IQ when he raced home on misplayed short hop throw to first base that helped the C's get ahead by a pair.

Everett wasted no time tying the game. They rallied for two runs on a walk and a pair of hits - highlighted by top Mariners prospect Noelvi Marte's two-RBI double - to even the score 2-2. That's where things would stay until the decisive ninth.

Newcomer Michael Dominguez made his C's debut with three innings in which he allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits with two walks and two strikeouts before passing the baton to Sean Wymer, who logged three scoreless innings of relief after pitching two perfect frames in Spokane over the weekend. Mat Svanson worked a 1-2-3 seventh in his first turn in High-A.

On offense, Berroa paced the bats with two hits and two steals. Spain's double in the ninth was the only extra base hit for the Northwest League leaders in extra base knocks.

With the loss, the C's are now 16-9 in the second half and hold a half game lead over second-place Eugene. It's the first time the C's have lost consecutive games since July 6-8 when they dropped three straight to the AquaSox in Everett.

Vancouver returns to work Thursday for Pride Night. #22 Blue Jays prospect Chad Dallas takes the ball for the Canadians opposite Everett's Logan Rinehart. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. and coverage can be found on CanadiansBaseball.com, MiLB.TV and the Sportsnet Radio Network.
