Vancouver Canadians News Release
(Avista Stadium - Spokane, WA) - It was a game that wasn't for the weak of heart as the Vancouver Canadians nearly coughed up a four-run lead in the bottom of the 9th inning, but held on for a 9-7 victory over the Spokane Indians as RHP Philip Brua was able to lock down the victory with the bases loaded in front of 6,876 fans out at Avista Stadium.
Vancouver jumped out to an early four run lead in the top of the 1st inning as the C's sent nine hitters to the plate including 1B Kevin Patterson who picked up a pair of RBI when his single off of Spokane LHP Victor Payano scored both CF Jon Jones and 2B Jon Berti.
The Canadians four run cushion evaporated in a matter of minutes as the Indians would score a quartet of runs in the home half of the 1st inning which included a two-run home run off the bat of 1B Brett Nicholas, his 4th of the season, scoring CF Zach Cone in the process.
Vancouver regained the lead in the top of the 3rd inning when C Garrett Maines hit his third home run of the season with RF Nick Baligod already on-base to give Vancouver a 6-4 lead.
Three more runs helped the Canadians to a 9-4 lead in the top of the 4th inning as LF Steve McQuail crushed a double down the right field line that scored both 1B Kevin Patterson and DH Balbino Fuenmayor helping Vancouver to the biggest lead of the night.
The Indians would inch closer in the bottom of the 4th inning by grabbing a lone run to cut the lead to 9-5 when a groundout from CF Zach Cone scored RF Hirotoshi Onaka.
Both Spokane and Vancouver got impressive outings from their respective bullpens and the offense was held off the score sheet until the bottom of the 9th inning when Canadians manager John Schneider went to his closer RHP Drew Permison who struggled for his second straight outing.
Permison would put 2B Rougned Odor on with a walk before giving up a single to 1B Brett Nicholas. The Canadians closer would strike out both CF Zach Cone and DH Trevor Adams to bring the C's to within an out of a Friday night victory before Permison would give up three straight singles to C Jorge Alfaro, 3B Nick Vickerson and SS Hanser Alberto cutting the lead to 9-7 with the winning run on-base.
Canadians manager John Schneider would go to his bullpen and pull out sidewinder RHP Philip Brua who with two outs would get LF Braxton Lane to fly out to CF Jon Jones to secure the victory.
