C's Eliminate Volcanoes from Post-Season Contention with 7-4 Victory

(Scotiabank Field) - The Canadians (20-7) got eight scoreless innings from their stingy bullpen while the offense worked towards seven unanswered runs helping the C's dig out of an early deficit to top Salem-Keizer 7-4 on Wednesday evening in Oregon. The victory eliminates the Volcanoes (8-19) from Northwest League playoff contention.
The Volcanoes opened the game scoring four runs in the bottom of the 1st inning off of Canadians RHP Kyle Christensen who scattered five hits in his only inning of work.
Vancouver would help get Christensen off the hook in the top of the 3rd inning as Vancouver would send nine hitters to the plate producing five runs off of Salem-Keizer starter RHP Taylor Rogers. The big blow in the inning came off the bat of CF Michael Choice scoring both LF Jeff Bercume and C John Nester helping give the C's their first lead of the night.
Vancouver would score in the top of the 4th inning when DH Josh Whitaker slammed his 4th home run of the summer over the left field wall helping the C's to a 6-4 lead.
While the offense was helping grab the Canadians the lead, the Vancouver bullpen was outstanding in relief of RHP Kyle Christensen. The combination of RHP Zach Thornton, RHP Blake Hassebrock, RHP Pedro Vidal and closer RHP A.J. Griffin went eight scoreless innings to help Vancouver win their 20th game of the Northwest League's second half as the C's tacked on a lone run in the top of the 9th inning to top Salem-Keizer 7-4.
Notes: The win moves Vancouver to 20-7 (.740) on the NWL second half, five games clear of Everett who topped Eugene 7-4 to push the Emeralds seven games back of Vancouver with 11 games remaining... Vancouver's magic number to clinch a playoff spot is 5 with Eugene's loss... The Canadians magic number to win the West Division outright drops to seven with Wednesday night's win... The victory moves Vancouver to 37-28 on the summer surpassing the Canadians 36 wins accumulated over 76 games back in 2009.
