SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Philippe Paradis notched the team's lone goal as the Syracuse Crunch were downed by the Portland Pirates, 4-1, tonight at the War Memorial Arena.
Crunch goaltender Kristers Gudlevskis made 21 saves on 24 attempts, while Pirates netminder Mike McKenna allowed just one goal on 21 shots. Syracuse was unable to convert on two power play opportunities. The team successfully shut down two of three Portland man-advantages.
The loss closes out a season-long six-game homestand and puts the Crunch at 7-5-0-1 on the season and 0-1 in the two-game season series. The Pirates sit at 7-6-0-0.
The Pirates were quick to solve Gudlevskis, capitalizing on a turnover just 1:37 into the contest. Shane Harper stripped the puck from a Crunch defender and passed it out for Connor Brickley to one-time from the slot. With 7:51 remaining in the first, Fulton, New York native Rob Schremp built a two-goal lead over the Crunch. After receiving the puck from Logan Shaw at the right-wing boards, Schremp skated in and fired a wrist-shot from a sharp angle that clipped the post on it's way into the net.
Portland struck again late in the middle frame. Michael Matheson went top shelf from the right face-off dot while on an odd-man rush. Chase Balisy picked up a point on the goal.
The Crunch got on the board at the 7:59 mark of the third period. Paradis threw a shot on net from the slot that ricocheted off McKenna's glove and trickled across the goal line. Tanner Richard and Yanni Gourde assisted on the tally.
With 35 seconds remaining in the game, Brett Olson netted an empty net power-play goal to defeat the Crunch, 4-1. Cameron Gaunce picked up the primary assist. Balisy recorded a multi-point game with the secondary helper.
The Crunch travel to face the St. John's IceCaps on Friday, Nov. 20.
