Elmira Pioneers News Release
Wednesday, August 28, 2002 - Bicentennial Park - Allentown, Penn.
In a game played in miserable conditions with a steady light rain throughout the night Elmira was able to bear down for a 7-0 victory at the Allentown Ambassadors Wednesday evening at Bicentennial Park.
With the win, Elmira stretches their longest winning streak of the season to 8 in a row and equals last year's win total of 51 games.
Jackson Crowther (1-1 / 6-8) needed only 90 pitches to shut down the Allentown offense in recording his first Elmira victory since coming over from Berkshire in a trade 3 weeks ago. Crowther retired the final 18 batters of the game in order and did not allow a base-runner after the 4th inning. He walked none and struck-out 5 batters. Crowther also ended a personal 6-game losing streak with the 4-hit gem.
The Pioneers will be guaranteed a playoff spot if they go 2-2 in their remaining 4 games and can conceiveably make it into the post-season with fewer wins if they get help in other games. There are a minimum of scenarios that would prevent Elmira from advancing as the Pioneers appear to have all but locked up a match-up with New Jersey in the first round best-of-5 series beginning next Wednesday at Yogi Berra Stadium.
Pedro Quero (15) and Michael Coleman (5) hit HR's for Elmira and Brian Jones added a 3-run triple to the attack.
Brandon Pernell went 0-for-4 in the game ending his hitting streak at 24 games, the longest in the league eclipsing New Jersey's Bill Rich by 1 game. Pernell hit a hot sinking line-drive in the 6th inning but 3B Josh Tehonica caught it just above the ground to deny Pernell. The Pioneers CF did get hit by a pitch, steal 2 bases and score 1 run.
Elmira collected 11 hits in the game to extend their streak of 10 more hits to 9 games in a row.
Elmira improved to 11-2 vs. Allentown this season as the Ambassadors fell to 24-61, 1 shy of the league record for losses.
Quero hit a high-arching 2-run HR in the 2nd inning barely clearing the tall LF screen for his team leading 15th HR of the season and 5th in the past week. Quero is 4th in the league in long-balls.
Brian Jones hit a bases-loaded triple to increase the lead to 6-0 in the 3rd frame. Michael Coleman hit an impressive, tpwering shot deep into the Allentown night in the 9th innig for his 5th HR since joining the Pioneers less than 3 weeks ago accounting for Elmira's final run.
Elmira looks to extend their win streak to 9 games in the Thursday night series finale at Allentown. The forecast is calling for at least a 1/2 inch of rain in the area but the league curfew will be lifted for the contest because it is the last meeting the regular season between the two teams and there is no realistic make-up date for the game if rained-out.
Greg Keagle (9-9, 3.10) looks to extend his personal 4-game win streak as he takes on Allentown LH chris zallie (2-4, 3.99). Friday through Sunday is fan appreciation weekend at Dunn Field with several terrific prizes for the fans in the Pioneers last games of the regular season.
If Elmira makes the playoffs, they would games 1 and 2 of their best of 5 series at NJ on Sept 4 and 5 (Wed and Thu) and would host NJ for games 3, 4 and 5 on Sept 6, 7, 8 (Friday, Saturday and Sunday).
Fans are encouraged to reserve their playoff tickets in advance by contacting the Pioneers at (607) 734-BALL. Advance purchase of playoff packages earns a $2 discount per game.
