Columbus Crew SC News Release
COLUMBUS - Major League Soccer announced today that a pair of Crew Homegrown Players -- midfielder Wil Trapp and goalkeeper Matt Lampson - are among the 20 up-and-coming stars selected for the 2014 Chipotle MLS Homegrown Game on Monday, August 4 at Providence Park in Portland, Oregon as part of the festivities leading-up to the 2014 AT&T MLS All-Star Game.
The Crew is one of seven MLS teams to have a pair of Homegrowns on the roster, while six other clubs had one player selected. After a pair of signings in January, the Black & Gold have seven Homegrown Players on their active roster, tying FC Dallas for the League lead.
The squad of Homegrown Players are set to take on the Portland Timbers' Under-23 side in a contest that kicks-off at 10:00 p.m. ET on Monday, August 4 and will be streamed live on WatchESPN and MLSsoccer.com.
"We are excited for Wil and Matt to have this opportunity," said Crew Sporting Director and Head Coach Gregg Berhalter. "Their selection is a testament to the hard work and success of the Crew Youth system, and specifically our Academy program. We're pleased to be among the MLS leaders in Homegrown Player development, and we're proud of all seven of our current Homegrowns and their contributions to our organization."
Trapp has featured prominently for the Crew over the last two seasons and has started all 29 games in which he's played. He was a member of the U.S. U-20 Men's National Team, played in all three Group Stage matches at the 2013 FIFA U-20 World Cup and was named U.S. Soccer's 2013 Young Male Athlete of the Year. Lampson was named the Crew's 2013 Humanitarian of the Year and has made 13 starts in goal for the Crew, recording five shutouts.
All MLS clubs were asked to nominate eligible players for the game, and based on availability, the final 20 were selected in consultation with MLS Director of Player Programs Alfonso Mondelo, who will coach the Homegrown team. Players representing 12 MLS clubs will make up this year's Homegrown team.
