Crew Makes Roster Moves to Become Salary Cap Compliant

March 1, 2014 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Columbus Crew SC News Release

To comply with Major League Soccer's March 1 30-man roster deadline, Crew Sporting Director and Head Coach Gregg Berhalter announced that the club has waived goalkeeper Dan Withrow and is placing Homegrown rookie defender Matt Wiet on the Disabled List.

"We have a great group in camp and we'd like to keep everyone, but the unfortunate reality is that we have to make difficult decisions to become salary cap-compliant. Dan is someone we think highly of and we'll continue to monitor his career."

Withrow, selected 28th overall by the Black & Gold in the 2013 MLS Supplemental Draft, made three MLS Reserve League starts and played 40 minutes in a friendly against Wigan Athletic last season.

Regarding Wiet, Berhalter added: "Matt is continuing his recovery from injury and adding him to the Disabled List allows him to continue on that path, while also giving us roster flexibility."

Wiet enters his first season with the Crew following surgery to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament last summer while playing with Dayton Dutch Lions FC of USL-PRO. Wiet was a standout centerback at UCLA during his collegiate career and helped the Crew Soccer Academy to a number three national ranking as a teenager. He was signed as a Homegrown player in November of 2013.

The moves leave the Black & Gold with 29 players on the active roster and two unsigned players in preseason camp.
