Club Deportivo Chivas USA News Release
TUCSON, Ariz. (Saturday, March 1, 2014) - Chivas USA played Real Salt Lake to a 1-1 tie Saturday afternoon at the Kino Sport Complex to wrap up their four-game participation in the Desert Diamond Cup with a record of 1-0-3 and six points. Led by forward Erick Torres ' first-half score, the Red-and-White concluded their preseason camp with an unbeaten run of eight-straight across all competition. The Claret-and-Cobalt managed to pull even on Alvaro Saborio ' s equalizer in the second half.
RSL came within inches of opening the scoring in the seventh minute after the Goats were whistled for a foul just outside the top of the box and to the right of the arc. Forward Javier Morales took the free kick and floated his attempt over Chivas ' defensive wall but hit the top right corner of the crossbar with the shot.
The Red-and-White capitalized on their first threat in front of goal in the 10th minute to take the 1-0 lead when Torres corralled a cross whipped in to him inside the box from the left sideline. With a defender battling to control the pass, the striker fired toward goal to sneak it inside the left post to record his second preseason tally.
Two minutes later, Torres took his second shot on goal, this time from the top of the arc, but RSL goalkeeper Nick Rimando was able to collect the strike.
After solid looks in their attacking third that were repeatedly denied by Chivas USA netminder Dan Kennedy's stellar play, RSL equalized in the 70th minute when Morales took a pass from Tony Beltran and worked it along the end line and fed Saborio from outside the edge of the short area for the forwards tap-in on the doorstep.
The Goats looked to get numbers forward in search of reclaiming the lead by bringing in striker Luke Moore to make his Red-and-White debut. Both sides brought on their final substitutions soon after in search of the game-winner, but neither club managed to go ahead, as the rain-soaked match finished in a 1-1 stalemate.
Chivas USA will now return to Carson, Calif. on Sunday to finalize their preseason with the third leg of camp ahead of their March 9 season opener, where the Rojiblancos host the Chicago Fire starting at noon (PT) at the StubHub Center in a nationally televised match on UniMas.
