Columbus Crew SC News Release
COLUMBUS, Ohio - Columbus Crew President/General Manager Jim Smith announced today that the 2002 Columbus Crew 'Kicks for Kids' Charity Golf Classic, slated for Monday, August 5, at the New Albany Country Club, will benefit Columbus Mayor Michael Coleman's Cap City Kids Program.
Mayor Coleman's initiative is a comprehensive after-school program that not only incorporates trained staff, state of the art technology, high expectations and high performance standards to gauge student's academic achievement, but also provides more kids a safe place to learn and play when school lets out.
"We're proud to see the Columbus Crew is stepping up to support our Cap City Kids," said Mayor Coleman, who plans to play in the outing. "The team brings energy and excitement to any event and the players are proven partners for every kid growing up in our community."
Registration begins at 9:30 a.m., with a live auction starting at 10 a.m. Boxed lunches will be served at 11 a.m. and a shotgun start follows at Noon. Cocktails and hors d'ouevres cap the day at 6 p.m. The donation is $1,500 per foursome or $375 per individual, while hole sponsorship is $2,000.
This year's live auction items are sure to command some serious bidding. The granddaddy of the auction items is a five-day, four-night trip for four to San Diego, which includes two double occupancy rooms, four hospitality passes and four tickets to Super Bowl XXXVII.
Other live auction items include: A luxury suite for 12 to Jacobs Field for the Cleveland Indians-Oakland A's game on Aug. 22; A trip for two to the Kansas City Chiefs-Oakland Raiders game in Arrowhead on Oct. 27; Four tickets to Ohio State's home football opener against Texas Tech on Aug. 24; Four tickets to the Blue Jackets home opener vs. the Chicago Blackhawks on Oct. 10; Two tickets to the Ohio State-Michigan Big Ten Basketball game; Two tickets to the Cleveland Browns-Kansas City Chiefs game in Cleveland Stadium on Sept. 8; A Chicago weekend trip for two to the Ohio State-Northwestern football game on Oct. 5; and Dinner for four at any Cameron Mitchell Restaurant.
One Crew player, coach or top-level administrator will join each foursome for an enjoyable afternoon of golf on the Jack Nicklaus signature designed Tournament Course.
"Our annual golf outing is an important initiative, in that it benefits local youth organizations through our 'Kicks for Kids' program and we are delighted to be working with the Mayor and Cap City Kids this year," Smith said. "On top of that, the event always serves as a fantastic opportunity for our players to interact with fans, sponsors and community leaders."
