Columbus Crew SC News Release
COLUMBUS, Ohio (Tuesday, November 29) - Columbus Crew Head Coach Sigi Schmid announced today that the team has acquired defender Ritchie Kotschau from the Colorado Rapids in exchange for forward Cornell Glen. With the move, The Crew now has two Senior International slots available.
"I'm looking forward to joining Columbus," said Kotschau. "Fernando (Clavijo) and I are on a different agenda. He wants things done a certain way and for some reason I'm not that fit for him. I am looking forward to a fresh start and coming in and helping the team out."
Kotschau is an eight-year MLS veteran, and turned 30 on Nov. 22. He was the second overall pick by Chicago in the 1998 MLS College Draft and helped the Fire win the MLS Cup in his rookie year. The NY native has played in 198 regular season games in his career, starting 179. He has nine goals and 15 assists for 33 points. His goals and assists have come at key times, with five goals and four assists being game-winners. He has also played in 14 playoffs games, starting 11, and has one goal and one assist in playoff action.
"The addition of Richie gives us an experienced left-sided defender who also has the ability to play as an outside back or in the center of the defense," said Schmid. "We are very excited to add Richie to our roster."
The reliable defender also made his first U.S. National Team appearance in 2005, starting a 3-0 win over Colombia in March. He has also represented the U.S. at the Under-23, Under-20 and Under-18 levels.
Kotschau played collegiately at George Mason University, where he helped the Patriots to their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance in 1996. Kotschau and his wife, Meredith, have an eight-month-old daughter, Reagan.
Cornell Glen was with The Crew for less than one season and played 22 games, starting 13, and scored four goals and tallied four assists. Glen was acquired by Columbus from Dallas on April 26, 2005, for The Crew's natural second-round pick in the 2006 MLS SuperDraft and a 2005 Youth International slot.
