Charlottetown Islanders News Release

The Charlottetown Islanders have faced some hot goaltending lately. Tonight was no exception.

The Isles peppered Blainville-Boisbriand Armada starter Brendan Cregan with 40 shots for the second consecutive game, yet Cregan stood tall. The Armada would defeat the Islanders 4-1, on a night where two points would have been crucial for the Islanders with Moncton and Cape Breton both not playing this evening.

For a team that came in to this game ranked second-last in the league on the powerplay, the Armada looked extremely comfortable with the man advantage, and used their time effectively. They'd draw first blood in this game early in the first; an Antoine Demers shot would carom off an Islander stick and get past Matthew Welsh. Demers would get credit for his sixteenth goal of the season on the play.

While the Islanders controlled much of the play throughout the first period, Cregan remained the difference once again. The overage netminder had the Isles number last week and continued his hot play against Charlottetown early in this one. His play allowed the Armada to extend the lead in the second. Once again on the powerplay, Miguel Tourigny would corral a puck at the point and unleash a heavy slapshot that would beat a screened Welsh, giving the Armada a 2-0 lead early in the second period.

The Islanders would scratch and claw throughout the period to get back in to the game, and they were finally rewarded. Drew Johnston would take a shot that would find the smallest seam on Cregan. The puck would dribble in to the crease and on to the waiting stick of Colin Van Den Hurk, who would make no mistake on the open net for his sixth goal of the season.

Unfortunately for Charlottetown, their penalty kill became their undoing once again. Luke Henman would re-gain the two-goal lead for the Armada before the end of the period, wiring a wrister past Welsh for his 12th goal of the season and a 3-1 lead heading in to the third.

Charlottetown would fire everything and the kitchen sink at Cregan and Blainville to get back in to the game. The home team, though, would lock it down, keeping the Isles out of the net the rest of the way. Benjamin Corbeil would add an empty-netter and the Armada would take their second consecutive victory over Charlottetown.

Cregan would make 39 saves in the victory. Welsh was also stellar between the pipes, making 27 saves in the defeat.

The Islanders wrap up their final Quebec road trip of the season tomorrow afternoon at 5:00pm Atlantic in Gatineau against the Olympiques. You can catch all the action on Fair Isle Ford Isles Radio with George Matthews and Darcy Cudmore. Our next home game is Wednesday night, March 6th, against the Val d'Or Foreurs in a make-up game from December 2nd.
