Hickory Crawdads News Release
CHARLESTON, W. Virginia - The Hickory Crawdads struck for six runs in the first inning and cruised to the 9-3 win against the West Virginia Power before 3,419 fans at Appalachian Power Park on Saturday night.
The Crawdads (29-31) came out with a patient approach that benefited them in the first inning, scoring six runs on three walks, two hit batters and two hits and a total of five wild pitches. The majority of the damage was done against RHP Rafael De Los Santos (0-1), who retired only one batter in the start before being relieved by RHP Wilson Ortiz. DH Mike Hollander registered an RBI with a sacrifice fly, 1B Jared Bolden drove in a run with an RBI single and SS Leury Garcia capped the inning with a two-out, two-run double. All six runs were charged to De Los Santos.
The Power (24-38) began to chip away with an earned run against RHP Wilfredo Boscan (4-3) in the bottom of the first inning and an unearned run in the second, cutting the Crawdads lead to 6-2. However, Hickory tacked on another run in the third inning. Hollander singled with one out, then advanced to third on a Bolden base hit. C Leonel De Los Santos brought Hollander in with a sacrifice fly, making it 7-2.
The Crawdads extended the lead to seven runs in the top of the sixth inning, when 3B Matt West drove a two-run home run over the left field wall, scoring RF Mike Bianucci and putting Hickory ahead, 9-2. The Power plated an unearned run in the bottom of the ninth, but would come no closer, as the Crawdads took the 9-3 win.
Boscan dealt the first five innings, earning the win while only surrendering the two runs (one earned) on three hits with two strikeouts and one walk. LHP Yoon-Hee Nam then pitched a scoreless sixth, before giving way to RHP Trevor Hurley. Hurley struck out the side in the seventh and navigated through the eighth in scoreless fashion as well. RHP Mark Hamburger took over for the ninth, and struck out the side to close the game despite the unearned run scoring for West Virginia. De Los Santos was tagged with the loss for the Power.
