Youngstown Phantoms News Release
YOUNGSTOWN, OH- The Youngstown Phantoms fell to the Bloomington Thunder, 4-1, on Saturday night. Lukas Craggs scored the lone goal for the Phantoms, who lose to the Thunder for the first time this season.
The Thunder found their way onto the scoresheet first, midway through the opening period, when Tarek Baker scored on the power play, giving the Thunder a 1-0 lead, 11:56 into the opening frame. That lead was extended to 2-0, when Ryan Siroky netted his second goal on the weekend at the 18:39 mark.
Bloomington found the back of the net again early in the second period, when Max Gotlieb scored his first of the season, putting the Thunder up, 3-0, 2:59 into the frame, and chasing Phantoms goaltender Colin DeAugustine from the game.
The Phantoms had a plethora of scoring opportunities, including a missed Kyle Connor penalty shot, but the Phantoms eventually found the back of the net midway through the period, when forward Max Letunov took a shot from the near side blueline that was deflected by Craggs past Thunder netminder David Jacobson, cutting the Thunder lead to 3-1 after two periods.
"Max took a shot and I went to the net, and it took a lucky bounce off my stick and went in," said Craggs. "It felt good to get the monkey off my back, and it's great to get going and to start finding a rhythm."
The Phantoms continued to get quality scoring chances and pepper Jacobson with shots, however an empty netter late in the third from Baker sealed the 4-1 win for the Thunder.
"I thought the first 20 minutes weren't our best, but after that we controlled the pace of the game," said Head Coach Anthony Noreen. "Credit them for blocking a lot of shots, but it's very hard to win a hockey game when you miss a couple of breakaways and some two-on-one's, and it's also hard to win when you spend that much time on the penalty kill."
The Phantoms were outshot, 33-23, on the night, while the power play was 0-for-3 on the night. The Phantoms wrap up their three game road trip next Friday night, when they take on the Muskegon Lumberjacks in the front end of a home-and-home. Faceoff is scheduled for 7:15.
