Crabs Tie Season Low In Hits; Drop Series Opener Against Patriots

September 2, 2010 - Atlantic League (AtL)
Southern Maryland Blue Crabs News Release

The Blue Crabs were held to three hits, tying a season low, in an 8-1 loss to the Somerset Patriots before a crowd of 3,498 Thursday night at Regency Furniture Stadium.

From the fourth all the way into the ninth inning, Patriots' LHP Brian Adams (3-2) and righty Jerry Dunn combined to retire 15 Blue Crabs in a row. Adams earned the win, tossing seven innings. Designated hitter Matt Craig broke the streak with a one out double, but was left on base.

Playing in his first game since August 18 at Bridgeport, Craig went 2-for-4, including an RBI single in the first.

Somerset took the lead in the top of the inning when first baseman Joe Burke hit an RBI double, scoring centerfielder Wayne Lydon who drew a leadoff walk. Burke then scored two batters later on an RBI fielder's choice by designated hitter Josh Pressley, giving the Patriots a 2-0 advantage. Craig's RBI base hit drove in rightfielder Jamar Hill who led off with a walk, stole second and reached third on an error. While Craig sliced the Blue Crabs deficit in half, Southern Maryland was shut out through the next eight innings.

The Patriots went ahead 5-1 in the fourth on a three run homer crushed to deep rightfield by Lydon. Lydon's seventh jack of the season drove in shortstop Iggy Suarez and rightfielder Joe Holden. RHP Dan Reichert (15-9) retired the next seven batters he faced, but in the seventh, third baseman Jeff Nettles roped a two RBI homer around the leftfield foul pole. It was his sixth home run of the season, and put the Patriots up 7-1.

Reichert struck out seven batters in as many innings of work, but suffered the loss. He remains the league leader in wins and strikeouts with 132. Leftfielder Noah Hall scored the final run of the night for Somerset on an RBI fielder's choice ground out by Holden.

At 73-49, the Blue Crabs maintain the best overall record in the Atlantic League, and are 32-20 in the second half.

The Blue Crabs return to action Friday night for game two of a four-game series against the Somerset Patriots at Regency Furniture Stadium. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
