Crabs and Skeeters Split Doubleheader

WALDORF, MD . - The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs split a day-night doubleheader to end the first half of their 2014 season as they lost 7-5 in nine innings to the Sugar Land Skeeters in Game 1 before responding with a 7-3 win in the Game 2 nightcap. Southern Maryland ends the first half of the 2014 campaign with a record of 29-41.

GAME 1: SUGAR LAND 7, SOUTHERN MARYLAND 5 (9 innings)

Ryan Langerhans drew a bases-loaded walk and Taylor Harbin added a sacrifice fly as the Sugar Land Skeeters outlasted the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs 7-5 in extra innings of Game 1.

Gary Majewski (4-0) threw three scoreless innings of relief to earn the victory and keep the Skeeters slim playoff hopes alive for the first half of the season in the Freedom Division. Eduardo Morlan (2-2) took the loss for the Blue Crabs who matched their season-high with four errors committed.

Trailing 1-0 after a half inning, the Blue Crabs erupted for four runs to take the lead. Jermaine Mitchell led off with a walk, stole second base, and scored on a double by Amadeo Zazueta to tie the game. Then after a walk to Jake Opitz, Luke Murton launched a three-run home run to left field, his third of the season, for a 4-1 lead.

Sugar Land tied it up with two home runs of their own in the 2nd inning. Nick Stavinoha led off the frame with his team-leading eighth home run of the season and Langerhans hit a two-run home run over the left field wall to tie the game at 4-4.

Allan de San Miguel wrestled the lead back for the Blue Crabs in the bottom of the 4th. The first two batters reached with hits and de San Miguel singled back through the middle for his ninth RBI of the season and a 5-4 Southern Maryland lead. Stavinoha's second home run of the game tied the game in the 6th inning as he connected for his ninth of the year off reliever Erik Hamren

GAME 2: SOUTHERN MARYLAND 7, SUGAR LAND 3

The Blue Crabs scored in four of their six innings at the plate in Game 2 to come away with a 7-3 victory and earn the doubleheader split. The loss eliminated the Skeeters from contention for the first half division title in the Freedom Division.

Jake Opitz put Southern Maryland in front in the bottom of the 2nd inning with an inside-the-park home run. Opitz lined the ball off the right field wall and it caromed off the wall away from right fielder Brian Barton, allowing Opitz to hustle all the way home. The home run is his tenth of the season.

Both teams were able to come away with a run in the 3rd inning. Langerhans tied the game briefly in the top half of the third with an RBI single to center field but Steve Moss put the Crabs back on top 2-1 in the bottom half of the 3rd with a two-out, RBI single to right field.

The Blue Crabs had more two-out magic in the 4th inning as James Skelton doubled to deep center field to score two and extend the lead to 4-1. York got those runs back in the top of the 5th without a run-scoring hit. Langerhans was hit with a pitch with the bases loaded and Taylor Harbin brought in a run with a fielder's choice to cut the deficit to one again at 4-3.

Southern Maryland added three huge insurance runs in the bottom of the 6th. The Crabs loaded the bases with one out for Skelton who drove in a run with a groundout to double the lead. Bobby Stevens delivered the big hit of the inning with a two-run double down the left field line that pushed the lead to 7-3.

The Blue Crabs finish their series with the Skeeters tomorrow afternoon with a 2:05 first pitch. Southern Maryland will send righty Brian Grening (0-3, 9.27) to the mound against Skeeters lefty Steve Hammond (4-5, 3.64).
