Clearwater Threshers News Release
CLEARWATER, Fla. - Dylan Cozens ripped three doubles and matched a season-high with four hits, leading the Clearwater Threshers in a 9-5 win over Brevard County on Sunday afternoon.
The Threshers (32-31) earned the series victory over the Manatees, and have now won four of their last five contests.
Kelly Dugan made his third start for Clearwater after being activated from Reading's disabled list on Friday, and finished 1-for-4 with a single and a run scored.
Mark Leiter, Jr. took the ball for Clearwater on Sunday, and battled his way through five innings in the no-decision.
Brevard County (27-35) opened the ballgame with three consecutive singles, but Leiter was able to limit the damage to just a run. Chris McFarland added a two-out RBI single in the second to put the Manatees ahead by two.
Clearwater answered in the fourth. With two one and one out, Andrew Knapp got the Threshers on the board by lofting an opposite field double to left that scored Andrew Pullin, and Willians Astudillo followed that up with a two-run single to left to give Clearwater its first lead, 3-2.
Brevard County loaded the bases with nobody out in the fifth, but Leiter held them to just a run on a Victor Roache sac fly. He then got Garrett Cooper to ground into a 5-4-3 double play to end the frame.
Leiter exited after five innings, having allowed three runs on seven hits and a walk while picking up two strikeouts.
After the Manatees rallied for a pair of runs against reliever Miguel Nunez (1-2) in the sixth, Clearwater rushed back with a five-spot in the bottom half.
Dugan and Cozens teamed up for a single and a double to set up two men in scoring position to start the frame. After a fielder's choice allowed Knapp to reach and load the bases, Astudillo was hit by a pitch to push home a run.
One out later, Mitch Walding delivered on an 0-2 pitch by stinging a grounder into center for a double that brought two runs home to give the Threshers the 6-5 advantage. Drew Stankiewicz tacked on some insurance with a two-out, two-run single up the middle to push the lead to 8-5.
Edubray Ramos was spotless in relief, tossing three perfect frames to lock down his fifth save.
Ramos struck out each of the first five men he faced, and finished having retired six of the nine batters against him on strikes.
Clearwater will continue the homestand on Monday, as the Threshers welcome in the St. Lucie Mets for the opener of a four-game series with Colin Kleven (4-3) on the bump. The call can be heard live on the Threshers Broadcast Network starting at 6:45 p.m.
Monday is also Feeding Frenzy at Bright House Field, and this week's menu will feature a bacon theme. Tickets can be purchased at the Threshers box office.
