Coyotes halt Alexandria win streak

Alexandria, LA - The Edinburg Coyotes halted the Alexandria Aces' four-game winning streak Saturday in a four-hour marathon at Bringhurst Field. The teams combined for 18 walks, and the Coyotes scored six runs in the fourth inning en route to a 12-9 win before a crowd of 3,183.

Alexandria led 5-2 until a disastrous fourth inning in which seven consecutive Coyotes reached base against starter Buddy Bengel and losing pitcher Curt Borland (3-3). The biggest hit was a three-run double by Carlos Gallardo that gave Edinburg a 7-5 lead.

Rodney Medina finished 4-for-6 to lead the Edinburg attack, including an RBI single in a three-run sixth inning. Eric Gonzalez and Gallardo each had two hits, while Jose Olmeda hit his 16th home run. Lefthander Bric Steed (8-3) pitched five innings and allowed only three earned runs to earn the win.

The Aces got off to a flying start in the bottom of the first inning when first baseman Josh Tranum crushed a three-run homer over the right-field wall. The Alexandria momentum continued into the second inning, when an Olmeda error allowed one run to score and Tranum drove in his fourth run of the game with a single. Selwyn Langaigne, Luis Espinosa, and Erick Mejias all had two hits for Alexandria.

The teams combined for 10 pitchers in the game, and both teams finished the day with their pitchers in the batting order. Alexandria manager Ricky VanAsselberg and catcher Ryan Smith were ejected in the sixth inning.
