Chiefs' Captain Jared Cowen assisted on a pair of goals for Team WHL in their 7-6 shootout loss to Team Russia in game five of the Subway Super Series. The six game series matches teams from the three leagues in the Canadiah Hockey League against Team Russia. Cowen was the captain for Team WHL in Wednesday night's game.
The Saskatoon Blade's Stefan Elliott and Curtis Hamilton each had a goal and an assist in the high scoring affair. The WHL built a 3-0 lead 6:31 into the game, but Russia scored three of the next four to pull within a goal just 41-seconds into the third period.
The Regina Pat's Jordan Weal and Hamilton scored less than a minute apart, at 8:40 and 9:34, to put Team WHL back on top by three goals, but Russia reeled them in with three of their own in a 2:42 span in the middle of the period.
Russia scored three times in four opportunities in the shootout while Team WHL was 1-4. Each team featured six different goal scorers and went 3-6 on the power play.
Wednesday's game, played in front of 5,456 fans at the Interior Savings Center in Kamloops, British Columbia, was the first of two that the WHL will play and was Russia's third win. They went 2-0 against the Quebec Major Junior Hockey league and 0-2 versus the Ontario Hockey league.
Game six of the series will take place on Thursday night in Prince George, BC. Cowen will not play in that game as he joins the Chiefs in preparation for a three game road trip through the U.S. Division beginning Friday night at Seattle. Spokane will travel to Tri-City on Saturday and Portland on Sunday.
