
Courage To Face Atlanta Beat In Preseason Tune-Up

Morrisville, NC (Feb. 24, 2003) - The defending WUSA Champion Carolina Courage will square off against regional rival the Atlanta Beat at 6:30 pm on Wednesday, March 19 at Macpherson Stadium at Bryan Park in Greensboro,NC. This exciting match is being brought to Greensboro by The Greensboro Youth Soccer Association, the Carolina Dynamo, and Time Warner Cable. Macpherson Stadium at Bryan Park is the home of the Carolina Dynamo and the Greensboro Twisters Professional Teams.
This exhibition match will serve as an important tune-up for both clubs as they prepare for the 2003 WUSA season which begins April 5. The last time Carolina and Atlanta met was in the semifinals on August 17, 2002. In that memorable contest, the Courage equalized with only minutes remaining. Then, in overtime, Courage defender Carla Overbeck tucked the golden goal past Beat goalkeeper Briana Scurry to send Carolina through to the Founders Cup.
"WUSA fans in Greensboro are going to be treated to a wonderful display of world class soccer,'' said Courage General Manager Scott Travasos. "The Courage has drawn such loyal support from the Triad area over our first two seasons. Bringing a game to Greensboro is our way of saying 'thank you'."

"We are very pleased to have a match of this quality played in Macpherson Stadium at Bryan park. I'm very excited that the Greensboro community will get to see some of the top female soccer players in the world, " said Carolina Dynamo General Manger and Head Coach.

Although the game starts at 6:30 pm, there will be an opportunity for all soccer fans to meet and greet members of the Carolina Courage at an autograph session at Bryan Park from 4:30-5:30pm. In addition to the autograph session there will be other activities planned that will be fun for all ages. Featuring the best women's soccer players in the world, WUSA athletes include Mia Hamm, Brandi Chastain, Tiffeny Milbrett, Briana Scurry, Julie Foudy and dozens of international stars. The eight WUSA teams are the Atlanta Beat, Boston Breakers, Carolina Courage, New York Power, Philadelphia Charge, San Diego Spirit, San Jose CyberRays and the Washington Freedom.
The Courage will begin its defense of the Founders Cup trophy on Saturday, April 5th at 2 pm at SAS Stadium in Cary. The season will begin in dramatic fashion with a rematch of the championship game, as Mia Hamm and the Washington Freedom come to town.
