Cary, NC (July 30, 2003) - Brazilian striker Katia scored the game-winning goal in the 63rd minute, as San Jose defeated Carolina, 2-1, at SAS Stadium. The victory lifts San Jose into a two-way tie with Carolina for 6th place, but only one point out of the playoffs. The CyberRays, having swept the Courage in all three meetings this season, hold a tie-breaker advantage over Carolina.

The CyberRays' Australian defender Dianne Alagich recorded her first WUSA points only one minute into the second half. Alagich launched a rocket from just outside the penalty area that beat Courage keeper Kristin Luckenbill to the upper right corner.

The Courage marched down the field and equalized only two minutes later. Defender Danielle Slaton rose above the San Jose defense to nod home a Brooke O'Hanley corner kick. It was Slaton's second goal of the 2003 campaign.

In the 63rd minute, Michelle French chased down a ball in the left corner of the field and served a fine cross through the goalmouth that froze Luckenbill. Katia, shedding her marker, headed the cross sharply into the Courage goal.

The Courage rallied late, but Venus James' 87th minute equalizer was disallowed due to an offside call.

With identical records of 7-8-3, both Carolina and San Jose one point behind New York and San Diego with three matches remaining to play.
