Carolina Courage News Release
CHARLOTTE, NC (November 4, 2003) - The Carolina Cobras announced the signing of Norris McCleary, a Shelby native and a former standout defensive end at East Carolina University. McCleary most recently spent time with the Seattle Seahawks of the National Football League after playing two seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs. The Cobras also announced that the team has re-signed offensive/defensive lineman Robert Stewart and wide receiver/defensive back Aundrae Harris.
Entering his first season in the Arena Football League, McCleary (6-5, 200, East Carolina) originally signed as a free agent with the Chiefs following the 2000 NFL Draft. He played in three contests during his rookie campaign, recording two solo tackles, before seeing action in 10 contests for Kansas City in 2001, posting seven tackles, including one for a loss. The Chiefs then allocated McCleary to NFL Europe in the spring of 2002 where he earned First Team All-League honors with the Frankfort Galaxy. Most recently, he saw time in the 2003 training camp with the Seahawks.
McCleary began his stellar football career at Bessemer City High School, where he received All-State recognition following his senior season. He went on to become a two-time All-Conference USA defensive lineman, leading the Pirates with 165 tackles, 12 tackles for a loss and 6.5 sacks during his 37-game career.
Stewart (6-0, 300, Alabama) begins his 11th season in the AFL and second with the Cobras. After beginning the 2003 campaign with the Arizona Rattlers, he signed with Carolina in early April and went on to record six tackles and a sack in six games. Stewart has previously been recognized as the 1999 AFL Lineman of the Year as well as earning First Team All-Arena honors on three occasions (1994, 1999, 2001). He currently ranks third all-time with 39.5 career sacks.
Harris (5-10, 185, California) enters his second season with the Cobras after originally joining the team for the final four games of the 2003 season. A former two-way performer at the University of California, he posted five receptions for 44 yards, along with eight tackles on defense, during his brief stint with Carolina.
The Cobras kick off the 2003 season on Sunday, February 8 on the road against the Dallas Desperados. Carolina will open their home schedule on Saturday, February 21 versus the Arizona Rattlers.
