Rio Grande Valley Dorados News Release
HIDALGO, TX: June 14, 2005 â arenafootball2 announced their weekly awards for Week 11 action and Rio Grande Valley Dorados offensive specialist Dwight Counter earned Offensive Player of the Week honors. Counter, a 6'2 200-pound rookie out of the University of New Mexico, broke two and tied two additional franchise single-game records in Saturday's 65-64 victory over the Tulsa Talons. He caught a franchise single-game high 18 catches for a franchise single-game best 217 yards with 4 touchdowns to tie a franchise single-game mark (24 points off the four touchdowns tied the other single-game record in Dorados history). The 18 catches by the Lancaster, Texas native is an af2 single-game high this season and was one away from Anthony Hines league record of 19 catches on 7/19/03 for Cape Fear. Counter's 217 receiving yards is the second highest amount totaled in an af2 contest this season. The performance places Counter as the team's leader in all-purpose yards with 1121 (140.1 per game average) and he has 714 receiving yards off 58 catches in 8 games this season.
The honor is the first received by Counter in his career and is the first time a Dorados member has ever received the Offensive Player of the Week honor. Counter's honor marks the fourth time a Dorados member has been recognized this season for an af2 weekly award. Defensive specialist Norman Mason earned ADT Defensive Player of the Week honors for Week 8 and 9, and Chris Robinson claimed the US Army Ironman award in Week 4. The four awards tops the overall amount of weekly awards the Dorados earned last season. Karleton Thomas received ADT Defensive Player of the Game in Week 1 and Eddie Motten received the same honor for Week 14 and 18 of last season. Media members seeking an interview with Counter and/or Dorados Head Coach Kevin Guy are encouraged to contact Chris Due with the Dorados at 956-843-5656.
The Dorados next home game will is June 18th, as the Dorados host the Central Valley Coyotes at Chase Field inside the Dodge Arena. Individual tickets for the game and all other home games are already on sale. Additional info can also be found by visiting the Dorados online at www.doradosfootball.com.
