Kane County Cougars News Release
GENEVA, Ill--- All of the Cougars' runs against the TinCaps came unearned Tuesday night at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark. The Cougars took advantage of five Fort Wayne errors for their first home opener victory since 2010 winning, 4-3.
Defensive mistakes by the opponent allowed the Cougars to quickly take the lead. Jake Hannemann led the offense with a single in the first inning and stole second base. Two batters later Ben Carhart walked. Yasiel Balaguert then hit into a fielder's choice, but an errant throw from Franchy Cordero allowed Hannemann to score and Carhart to reach third base. Jacob Rogers followed with another fielder's choice that sent Carhart home for a 2-0 Cougars lead.
The Cougars tacked on another unearned run in the second inning. With one out, Trey Martin reached second base on another throwing error on the infield. Hannemann delivered a two-out RBI single to push the Cougars ahead 3-0.
Jen-Ho Tseng retired eight straight batters, but hit speed bump in the fifth inning. After a single by Luis Tejada and a double by Ryan Miller, Henry Charles punched an RBI single to put the TinCaps on the board trailing 3-1. Mallex Smith used a suicide squeeze to bring home Miller and Dustin Peterson squared things, 3-3 with a base hit to plate Charles.
The contest remained notched up at three until the 12th inning. Nick Mutz came out to the mound for his second inning of work and received no help on the defensive side. Carlos Penalver led off the inning reaching on a single, Hannemann's bunt was then thrown away to put runners at the corners. After Daniel Lockhart was intentionally walked, Carhart hit a groundball to the TinCaps' shortstop Cordero. Cordero's attempt to throw home went wild and Penalver came home for the winning run for a final score of 4-3.
The Cougars and TinCaps will meet again Wednesday for a 12:00 p.m. scheduled first pitch at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark. Paul Blackburn (0-0, 9.00) will take the mound for the Cougars against Fort Wayne's Adrian De Horta (0-0, 11.57). For tickets, please call (630) 232-8811 or visit www.kccougars.com.
