Peoria Chiefs News Release
PEORIA, IL- A scoreless game was finally broken in the sixth inning when Ronald Castillo flipped a single into shallow centerfield to score Mason Katz from second base with two outs, as the Peoria Chiefs won the home opener 1-0 over the Dayton Dragons on Tuesday night. The win moves the Chiefs to 3-2 on the young season with five games left in the homestand.
The Dragons had the first chance as Sebastian Elizande doubled to start the second inning but he was stranded as Nick Petree struck out the next two and got a flyout. Matthew Young tripled for the Chiefs with two outs in the bottom of the inning but didn't score.
Dayton put two on in the third but couldn't score. They also loaded the bases in the fifth but Petree again dug deep to keep the game scoreless. He issued a leadoff walk in the sixth and was replaced by Zach Loraine.
The Chiefs finally broke through in the sixth. Junior Morillo, who started on the mound for Dayton, came out of the game with an apparent injury prior to a full count pitch to Katz, and was replaced by Daniel Wright. After throwing ball four, Wright balked Katz to second, and Carson Kelly flew out deep to left for out number two. Castillo blooped a single to center, and Katz scampered home with the game's only run.
Chris Perry threw a scoreless eighth for the Chiefs as the game remained 1-0. Two Dragons reached on singles in the ninth and Chris Thomas relieved Perry. The Chiefs closer needed just one pitch to save the game as Beau Amaral grounded right back to the mound.
Petree started on the hill for the Chiefs, and tossed five-plus innings of shutout ball on two hits, striking out six but also walking five. Loraine (1-0) made his season debut, and picked up the win with two shutout innings in which he allowed one hit and struck out one. Perry threw 1 2/3 shutout innings and struck out two while allowing two hits. Thomas retired the only batter he faced for the save.
