Kane County Cougars News Release
GENEVA, Ill. - Lendy Castillo put the Kane County Cougars into a deep hole early, allowing eight runs over his four innings, and the Dayton Dragons cruised to an 11-8 victory on Monday afternoon at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark.
Castillo (0-2) coughed up three runs in the top of the first as Zach Vincej walked and scored on a fielder's choice groundout off the bat of Jeff Gelalich. Jesse Winker followed that with a two-run homer to put the Dragons (10-20) up by three.
Jeimer Candelario doubled home Dan Vogelbach in the bottom of the first to put the Cougars (14-14) on the board, but the Dragons continued their assault on Castillo in the top of the second with Robert Ramirez scoring on a throwing error by second baseman Gioskar Amaya. Nick O'Shea cracked a three-run homer in the top of the third while Vincej knocked a two-base hit to bring home Beau Amaral.
Jeff Antigua replaced Castillo in the fifth and coughed up three more as Dayton pulled up to an 11-1 advantage. The Cougars didn't go down quietly as they picked up three of their own in the bottom of the fifth with Vogelbach doubling home a pair. Sal Romano (3-2) was taken out after five frames as he gave up four runs on six hits.
Joey Housey replaced Romano and walked Pin-Chieh Chen with the bases loaded in the sixth. Alejandro Chacin surrendered three in the bottom of the ninth before Sean Lucas (S, 3) entered the contest and fanned Marco Hernandez with two men on to finish the ballgame.
The Cougars hit the road on Wednesday night as they take on the Burlington Bees from Community Field at 6:30. Right-hander Pierce Johnson will start for the Cougars against fellow righty Aaron Newcomb. The Cougars return to Fifth Third Bank Ballpark on Tuesday, May 13, to battle the Peoria Chiefs at 6:30.
