Cougars Lose, Push Bandits to Brink of Playoffs

Davenport, Iowa - The Kane County Cougars (31-30) lost a 3-2 decision against Quad Cities River Bandits (37-20) on Saturday night at Modern Woodmen Park, bringing the River Bandits within one win of securing a playoff spot. It was the Cougars fourth straight defeat, a season high.

The Bandits grabbed a 2-0 lead in the second inning. David Hensley took Cougar starter Justin Lewis deep, a solo home run to make it 1-0. Three straight singles followed. Ross Adolph drove in the second run of the inning to give Quad Cities a two-run edge. The Cougars cut the deficit in half in the fifth inning. Tra Holmes and Keshawn Lynch singled to begin the frame. With one out, Eduardo Diaz's sacrifice fly made it 2-1.

Justin Lewis' night was done after the fifth inning. He was charged for two runs, four hits, struck out four and walked one. Andy Toelken came out of the bullpen. For the second straight night, the Bandits got an unearned run in the sixth inning due to an errant pickoff throw advancing a runner. Ruben Castro singled, went to second on the throwing error and later scored on Cesar Salazar's RBI fielder's choice.

Alek Thomas brought the Cougars back within one run with a solo homer in the top of the seventh, his sixth of the year.

Thomas' homer was the only run Humberto Castellanos allowed on the mound for Quad Cities. He earned a three-inning save. Brett Daniels (3-3) earned the win after six innings of one-run ball. Justin Lewis (3-4) took the loss.
