NEWARK, NJ - May 11, 2006 - The Newark Bears lost the final game of their five-game road trip to Camden Riversharks at Campbell's Field Thursday evening. Lefty Ryan Costello's complete game 6 hitter in a rain shortened 6 inning game was costly for the Bears as they fell to the Riversharks 5-3.
Costello improved to 2-0 on the season after giving up 3 runs on 6 hits, while Bears starter David Shepard falls to 0-2, after yielding 5 runs on 9 hits in 5 innings.
The Bears scored first when shortstop Donaldo Mendez hit a solo home run, his second of the season, in the top of the first inning. First Baseman Keith Maxwell tied the game at two when he hit his first home run of the season in the top of the third inning.
Camden took the lead for good in the bottom of the third inning when first baseman Ryan Jones hit an RBI single to give the Riversharks a 3-2 lead. Jones finished the day 3-for-3 with 2 singles, a double, 3 RBI, 2 runs scored, while third baseman Brad Strauss went 2-for-3 with a single, double, and 2 runs scored.
The Bears, who finished the five-game road trip 2-3, begin a three-game weekend series against the Atlantic City Surf Friday evening at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium, with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 pm.
