July 18, 2015 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL)
Vermont Mountaineers News Release
MONTPELIER, Vt. - Backed by a stellar pitching performance by starter Tom Cosgrove (Staten Island, N.Y. / Manhattan), the Vermont Mountaineers defeated the Keene Swamp Bats, 3-0, in a New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) affair at Recreation Field on Saturday night. With the score 3-0 entering the bottom of the eighth, heavy rainfall swept through Central Vermont, leading to a one hour and thirty-three minute rain delay.
With the win, Vermont maintains its position atop the Northern Division standings heading into the All-Star break. The Mountaineers hold a 19-13 overall record. With the loss, Keene drops to 8-23.
Vermont broke the deadlock in the bottom of the fifth inning, when the squad pushed two runs across. Shortstop Isaiah Pasteur (Westminster, Md. / Indiana) led off the frame with a single. The next batter, first baseman Joe Dudek (Wall Township, N.J. / Kentucky) cranked a line drive two-run shot over the right field wall to give Vermont a 2-0 edge.
In the seventh, the Mountaineers added one more run, when Dudek connected on a leadoff single to right. Austin Wilson (Valrico, Fla. / Eastern Michigan) entered the game as a pinch runner. After stealing second and advancing to third on a sacrifice bunt, Wilson scored when third baseman Austin Clemons (Louisville, Ky. / Louisville) smacked an RBI single to right. The hit made the score 3-0 and capped off the night.
Cosgrove dealt six innings and allowed no runs on five hits and no walks. He struck out three en route to moving to 4-1 on the summer.
Keene starter Tommy Doyle (Vienna, Va. / Virginia) took the loss, falling to 0-1. The righthander threw four and two-thirds innings and gave up two runs (both earned) on four hits and two walks. He struck out four.
Vermont reliever Colton Davis (Commerce, Ga. / Western Carolina) came on with two outs and two runners on in the top of the eighth and struck out Keene's leading hitter Garrett Christman (Noblesville, Ind. / Butler) to retire the side.
After the rain delay, Mountaineers' closer Sam Delaplane (San Jose, Calif. / Eastern Michigan) came on to retire the side in order in the ninth and earn his seventh save of the season.
The Mountaineers will return to action on Tuesday evening, when the squad travels to New Hampshire for a meeting with Keene. The game can be heard locally on CBS Sports 1240 WSKI and online at thevermontmountaineers.com.
