Corvallis completes 3 game sweep over Bend
August 7, 2013 - West Coast League (WCL)
Bend Elks News Release
Seth Spivey hit a triple and scored off of an RBI single from Turner Gill in the 7th inning, but by that point the Elks were already trailing 5-0, and Bend (30-21) was swept by the Corvallis Knights on Wednesday, losing 7-1.
Corvallis (34-17) captured the Southern Division title with the win over the Bend Elks Wednesday, as they used 5 runs in the 4th inning to help coast to the win. It started with Dane Lund reaching on an error by Elks 3rdbaseman Jerren Larimer to open up the inning, and Grant Melker dropped down a bunt single, but Elks starter Cory Mack on the play, in an attempt to get Melker at 1st, threw wild of Derek Dixon and Lund scored all the way from 1st base and gave the Knights the 1- lead. After Blake Drake dropped down a bunt single of his own and Peter Van Gansen drew a walk to load the bases, Cody Lenahan delivered a bases clearing, 3 run triple and the Knights lead 4-0. Kline followed with a sacrifice fly into right field to score Lenahan, and Corvallis blew it open with the 5-0 lead.
That proved to be more than enough for Knights starter Elliot Surrey (5-1) the West Coast League leader in earned run average, who faced the minimum hitters through the first 6 innings, as Surrey did give up 3 hits during that stretch, all 3 times the next hitter hit into a double play. Surrey would end up going 7 innings, giving up a 2 out triple to Seth Spivey in the 7th, and he was followed by Turner Gill, who shot a pitch through the left side of the infield to score Spivey and make it 5-1. Surrey ended up pitching 7 innings, giving up 1 run on 5 hits with 3 strikeouts, picking up his 5th win of the summer.
Corvallis tacked on 2 more in the 8th inning without a hit, as the Knights were benefactors of4 walks and an error by the Bend Elks in the inning, and shut down the Elks to earn the 3 game sweep.
Bend will conclude the regular season at home beginning Friday, as they welcome the Walla Walla Sweets to town, first pitch Friday at 6:35 p.m. The Elks need 1 more win, or losses by both Klamath Falls and Medford to secure the 2nd playoff birth in the WCL South division.
