CornBelters Winning Streak Ends at 9 with Loss at Traverse City

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. - The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, gave up a big first inning and ended their winning streak at nine games with a 5-3 loss to the Traverse City Beach Bums on Sunday evening at Wuerfel Park.
The Beach Bums scored three times in their first at bat to take the early lead on an RBI single by Will Kengor and a two-run base hit by Elijah Trail.
The CornBelters strung four hits together in the fifth inning to cut their deficit to 3-2 on RBI singles from Santiago Chirino and Aaron Dudley.
Will Kengor and Steven Patterson hit consecutive doubles in their fifth to build the Beach Bums' lead to 4-2. Marcos Derkes doubled over the right field wall in the sixth to drive in Kendall Patrick from second base and a 5-2 advantage for the hosts.
The Belters sliced the lead to 5-3 in the seventh inning with a two-out double to the left field corner by Dudley to score Chirino from first base.
Kramer Champlin (4-5) pitched a complete game for the win, giving up 11 hits with three earned runs on one walk and four strikeouts. Mike Elwood (1-2) took the loss, working five innings and giving up four earned runs on seven hits with three walks and seven strikeouts.
After Monday off, the nine-game road trip concludes with three games at Frontier League West-leading Southern Illinois on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights. Broadcast time all three nights on WJBC.com is 6:50.
