Southern Illinois Miners News Release
MARION, ILL. - The Southern Illinois Miners got a fantastic start on the mound by JARETT MILLER on Sunday at Rent One Park, and the offense scored in the first and piled on in the middle frames en route to a 9-5 win over the Joliet Slammers, avoiding a sweep by the visitors.
After Miller (7-3) held the Slammers off the board in the first, the Miners went right to work against Liam O'Sullivan (7-1) in their half of the inning, with three straight singles by BRANDON CUMMINS, AARON GATES and SHANE KENNEDY, with the latter picking up an RBI, making it 1-0. With NOLAN EARLEY batting, Kennedy stole second and a throwing error allowed Gates to come home and score to make the score 2-0 in favor of the Miners.
Southern Illinois then added on in the fourth inning, as Earley led off with a single followed two batters later by STEVE MARINO's single. RILEY MOORE then hit a sharp grounder that hopped over the first baseman's glove and down the line for a double to plate both Marino and Earley, doubling the lead to 4-0. Miller, meanwhile continued to hold the Slammers off the board on the mound, and the Miners would put the game out of reach in the fifth.
Gates tripled to lead off the frame and after Kennedy was hit by a pitch, Earley singled to make it 5-0. Three batters later, after an RBI fielder's choice by Marino and a walk by Moore, with two outs, JULIUS GAINES hit a ground ball to shortstop that was thrown wide to second base, extending the inning and loading the bases for FRANCISCO ROSARIO, who singled to drive in two more runs and chase O'Sullivan.
With the score 8-0, back-to-back walks by Cummins and Gates (the latter with the bases loaded) forced in another run and made it 9-0.
Joliet plated a run in the top of the sixth, but got no more against Miller, who pitched seven innings for the third start in a row, allowing just six singles and two walks while striking out six. In the eighth, with the bases loaded, a throwing error by ALEX DE LEON to a covering KYLE TINIUS was wide, and Joliet eventually scored four runs in the inning, but got no closer. Earley tied his career high with four hits in the game, going 4-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI, while Moore finished 3-for-3 with a double and two RBIs and Gates went 2-for-4 with a triple, RBI and two runs scored in the winning effort.
The Miners continue their homestand on Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m.
against the Normal CornBelters.
