Joliet Slammers News Release
JOLIET, IL- Joliet, IL- After winning seven games in a row and starting the nine-game home stand 6-0, the Slammers fell flat in the final three games of the stretch to the Normal CornBelters. The Joliet Slammers presented by ATI Physical Therapy lost to Normal 8-2 Thursday night.
The Slammers received great hitting and pitching in the first six games, but the Slammers were outscored 25-12 in the series.
Normal got on the board early in the second inning, putting up four runs on starting pitcher Sean Townsley and that is all they needed to get the win Thursday.
Joliet's offense did not struggle to get base hits, it just struggled to come through with runners in scoring position. Melvin Rodriguez noted that after Wednesday's game.
Luckily for the Slammers, both the Washington Wild Things lost and the now second-place Windy City ThunderBolts lost Thursday so Joliet keeps its 3.5 game lead.
The ThunderBolts are 3.5 games back of the Slammers after overtaking the Wild Things Wednesday.
Although after the three losses, the Slammers are still in first place, they couldn't have come at a worse time as they have to hit the road to take on the Southern Illinois Miners, who have the best record in the Frontier League.
Southern Illinois took the first two games from the ThunderBolts a couple weeks ago. The third game of the series was suspended in the seventh inning due to rain at Silver Cross Field.
The Slammers and the Miners will finish up that game on Saturday starting in the eighth inning, and play a seven-inning second game.
Rodriguez said Wednesday that the Slammers will need to get back to playing like they did over the course of their seven-game win streak.
Thursday's Merchants and Manufacturers Player of the Game was Melvin Rodriguez for driving in one of the Slammers' two runs.
