Normal CornBelters News Release
NORMAL, Ill. - The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, supported the second complete game from Julio Vivas with a 4-0 win over the Traverse City Beach Bums on Friday night at the Corn Crib.
The CornBelters scored in the opening frame with singles from Yeixon Ruiz and Santiago Chirino to lead off, followed by a sacrifice fly by Aaron Dudley to plate Ruiz, who moved to third on Chirino's hit.
Chirino made it 2-0 for the hosts when he barely cleared the right field fence with one out in the fifth inning.
The Beach Bums threatened in the fifth when a suicide squeeze attempt failed, and again an inning later but a diving catch and a throw to cut down a run at the plate, both by Normal left fielder Jesus Solarzano, kept Traverse City off the scoreboard.
The Belters bought insurance in the eighth inning with a pair of runs on an RBI single from Nolan Meadows and a fielder's choice by Justin Fletcher.
Julio Vivas (4-4) earned the shutout win, giving up six hits with three walks and six strikeouts. Brian Bayliss suffered the loss in his Beach Bums debut, working six innings with seven hits, one walk and three strikeouts.
The series continues Saturday at 6:35 p.m. at the Corn Crib as right-hander Charlie Gillies (4-3, 4.06 ERA) starts on the mound for the CornBelters against Traverse City right-hander Reinaldo Lopez (1-5, 4.22). The game can be heard on WJBC.com at 6:20 with listen links on the Belters Facebook and Twitter (@Normal_Baseball) feeds and on the schedule page at www.normalbaseball.com. XPogo Stunt Team performs, and half-price tickets are available on State Farm Saturday.
