Ottawa, ON - Quality pitching helped the Ottawa Champions avoid a sweep at the hands at the Quebec Capitales.

Starting pitcher Daniel Cordero (3-0) allowed zero earned runs and just three hits in a 2-1 Ottawa win.

The victory improves Ottawa's record to 8-12, and drops the Capitales to 11-8.

"We needed to win to get something out of this series and the pitching was really good," said Ottawa manager Hal Lanier. "It was really impressive, especially on a cold night."

Relief pitcher Miles Moeller went two innings for the save, striking out three and allowing no hits.

Lanier was also happy with the play of the Champions defensively. He referenced a "really good play" by shortstop Robert Garza to preserve the lead in the eighth inning.

Quebec scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the second inning, when a passed ball allowed Jordan Lennerton to score from third on an unearned run.

However, the Champions would not go down without a fight, answering back in the next inning. When Ottawa came up to the plate in the top of the third, they were able to move both Matt Helms and Sebastien Boucher onto the basepaths.

Kenny Bryant then singled, and an error brought both Helms and Boucher in to score. That gave Ottawa a 2-1 advantage.

"Boucher came through with some good and aggressive baserunning," said Lanier. "That let us score the second run."

From there, the Champions rode the hot play of Cordero.

The righty from Venezuela tossed seven complete innings, limiting the Capitales offence to just four baserunners. He struck out seven batters and walked one, not allowing any earned runs.

In the eighth, relief pitcher Miles Moeller retired the Quebec side three up, three down. Moeller returned to the game in the ninth, picking up his first save by striking out the side.

The Champions will travel south to face the Trois-Rivieres Aigles (3-16) tomorrow evening. The last-place Aigles are looking to break an eight-game losing streak. Champions ace Wilmer Font (0-2) is set to get the start.

First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
