Worcester Tornadoes News Release
Tuesday was a night of firsts for the Tornadoes, with Kevin Cooper earning his first win in his first start of the season. In his Tornadoes debut, Chris O'Neil got a base hit, and Worcester recorded its first shutout in 2010, blanking the Newark Bears 2-0.
The Tornadoes released reliever Ryan Lobban and outfielder Alex Fernandez, but signed O'Neil before the game. O'Neil played center, which moved Ryan Crespi to left for the first time all season, and Alex Nunez made his 2011 right field debut as a result of that move as well.
Kevin Cooper threw five scoreless innings, retiring the Bears in order in both the second and fourth innings. Cooper induced double plays in the first and the third innings, and worked out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the fifth to end his night.
Bears starter Victor Gonzalez went six innings in the loss, allowing one run on five hits and six walks, while striking four Tornadoes batters out. Reliever TJ Hose gave up one run on one hit, one walk, and recorded one strikeout in his two innings of work.
The Worcester bullpen combined for four scoreless innings. Sean Gregory allowed just one hit and one walk in two frames, while Albert Ayala had a perfect, three-swinging-strikeout eighth. Rick Asadoorian stayed perfect in the save chances department, notching his third of the year in as many tries with a 1-2-3 ninth.
Ryan Crespi was 2-for-2 with a pair of singles and advancing to first on a hit by pitch. His first single came on the first pitch of the third inning, and he came around to score the first run on Chris Colabello's RBI single.
In the seventh, Alex Nunez walked to lead off the inning, then scored from first on a hit-and-run. Abraham Nunez's single barely left the infield, but Alex wheeled all the way around to score an insurance run for Worcester.
The third and final game of the series is on Wednesday night at 7:05pm. Newark won the first game of the set 6-2 on Monday, so the mid-week game will also serve as the rubber game in the series.
