Can-Am League Game Recaps
Published on June 14, 2011 under Canadian American League (Can-Am) News Release
Quebec 3, New York 2 (Game 1 - 7 innings)
With the score tied in the bottom of the last scheduled inning, Quebec's Geofrey Tomlinson came to the plate with the winning run on second. He didn't disappoint, doubling in Seth Henry to put game one in the books. It was Tomlinson's only hit of the night, but it couldn't have come at a more timely position. Twice the Federals pulled even with the Capitales, who got their first lead on a Rene Leveret single in the second, but New York couldn't quite get over the hump. Starting Capitales pitcher John Mariotti threw seven innings and allowed just one run on two hits but didn't factor in the decision, with reliever Jeff Duda picking up a two-inning win.
Quebec 12, New York 1 (Game 2 - 7 innings)
The Capitales put the Federals away early in game two, plating 12 runs in the second and third innings and cruising to an 11-run win. Quebec LF Robert Wagner knocked a three-run homer in the third inning to give his club a 9-0 lead. Wagner batted in five runs on the game in a 2-4 performance. He also scored twice. Quebec starting hurler Karl Gelinas struck out 10 Fedarals batters in six one-run innings, giving up just three hits and a walk. Gelinas now has 27 strikeouts in 27 innings pitched. The Federals' lone run came in the sixth inning when a double-play allowed LF Stephen Pinto to cross home plate.
Pittsfield vs. New Jersey (Postponed)
The game between the Colonials and the Jackals was postponed due to rain. It will be made up as part of a double-header Wednesday beginning at 11:05 a.m. Both games will be seven innings.
Worcester 2, Newark 0
Five Tornadoes pitchers combined to shut out the Bears, with starter Kevin Cooper doing the majority of the damage, allowing four hits in five innings and striking out two. It was Cooper's first start of the season in his sixth appearance, giving the Texas-native his first win of the year and lowering his ERA to 4.22. Cooper and the bullpen got all the run support they needed in the third inning when Chris Colabello singled in Ryan Crespi from third base. On top of scoring one of Worcester's two runs, Crespi reached base in every plate appearance, going 2-2 and earning a base on a hit-by-pitch in the sixth. Worcester added an insurance run in the seventh to take the 2-0 win.
Brockton 6, Rockland 5 (10 innings)
Brockton took advantage of an inning-opening walk and a Boulders error in the 10th, ending the game on a Chris Grossman single to left field that scored pinch-runner Cameron Monger from third to give the Rox a 6-5, extra-innings win. Grossman went 3-5 on the night with the 10th-frame RBI his only of the game. Boulders CF Sean Smith increased his season average to .263 with a 2-4 night in which he scored twice. Rox reliever Dustin Birosak earned his first win of the game in his second appearance, tossing two perfect innings with three strikeouts. Birosak, starter Freddy Flores and Jake Hale combined to toss nine Ks in 10 innings while surrendering zero walks.
