Contreras' Double Sends Giants To Dramatic 2-1, 11-Inning Victory Over Modesto

Anthony Contreras' two-out double in the top of the 11th inning scored Travis Ishikawa with the winning run sending the San Jose Giants to a dramatic 2-1 victory over the Modesto Nuts on Sunday evening. In front of 1,514 fans at John Thurman Field, Joe Bateman notched the victory out of the bullpen for the Giants with three scoreless innings of work. With the win, San Jose took three-out-of-four games in the series from the Nuts.

With the game tied at 1-1, Ishikawa started the 11th inning rally by reaching on a one-out, strike three, wild pitch. Todd Jennings followed by drawing a walk before Jake Wald struck out. Contreras then stepped to the plate and hit a soft line drive down the left field line on a 2-2 pitch from Tomas Santiago to score Ishikawa with the go-ahead tally.

In the bottom of the inning, Bateman allowed a one-out single to Joe Gaetti before Christian Colonel reached base safely on a Contreras fielding error at second. After Michael Davies grounded into a fielder's choice, Bateman retired Kyle Wilson on a ground ball to shortstop stranding the tying run at third base and the potential winning run at first base. Bateman allowed two hits during his stint on the mound with one walk and four strike outs.

Jeff Petersen made his first start of the season for the Giants and fired five shutout innings. The right-hander surrendered three hits with two walks and five strike outs. Petersen, who has made 38 appearances out of the San Jose bullpen this year, achieved season-high totals in both innings and strike outs Sunday.

San Jose took a 1-0 lead against Nuts starting pitcher Juan Morillo with a run in the top of the fifth inning. Consecutive singles from Wald and Contreras started the frame before Pat Dobson brought home a run on a double play ground out. Morillo went the first seven innings for the Nuts yielding one run with eight strike outs.

Geno Espineli worked a pair of perfect innings out of the bullpen for the Giants before Jason Waddell allowed the tying run in the bottom of the eighth. Rick Guarno led off with a single and eventually scored on Seth Smith's two-out, bloop single to shallow right center field.

Contreras enjoyed his best game thus far with the Giants finishing 3-for-5 with the double and an RBI. The second baseman was the only San Jose starter with a multi-hit game. San Jose out-hit Modesto by a 8-7 margin.

The Giants (36-27) remained 1 1/2 games behind the Stockton Ports (37-25) for first place in the Second Half North Division race. The Ports defeated Bakersfield by a 14-12 score on Sunday. San Jose has seven games remaining in the regular season - four against Stockton.

* After an off day on Monday, the Giants return to action on Tuesday evening to open a three-game series at Rancho Cucamonga. First pitch at The Epicenter is scheduled for 7:15 P.M. Ryan Sadowski (9-6, 4.58 ERA) is slated to start on the mound for San Jose while the Quakes are expected to counter with Rafael Rodriguez (4-3, 6.94 ERA).
