Wells poweres his way to the California League's top pitching honor

Lake Elsinore, CA - The California League has announced that former Storm All-Star and current Mobile BayBear, Jared Wells has been honored as the California League's Pitcher of the Year. Wells is only the second Storm hurler ever to capture the award (Matt Beaumont in 1995) in franchise history. At the time of his promotion to Double-A Mobile, Wells led the California League with a 3.44 ERA while posting an outstanding 11-3 record. In 19 starts for Lake Elsinore, Wells struck out 80 while walking only 26 batters in over 120 innings of work. On his way to a perfect month of June, Wells posted a 1.89 ERA going 4-0 over the course of five starts. The 23-year-old was selected in the 31st round of the 2002 First-Year Player Draft by the San Diego Padres out of San Jacinto Junior College in Houston. In 2004 Wells split his second professional season between Single-A Fort Wayne and High-A Lake Elsinore and was a member of the Midwest League's mid-season All-Star team. Wells, a six-foot-four-inch right-hander from Brazoria, Texas is considered to be one of the Padres best power pitching prospects and was ranked as the Padres #15 overall prospect by Baseball America's Prospect Handbook prior to the 2005 season.
