Albany Firebirds News Release

Albany, N.Y., March 18, 2004 – The Albany Conquest will regain the services of their career tackles leader, John Stuart, for the 2004 season. Stuart, a defensive specialist, was assigned to the Conquest yesterday evening by the arenafootball2 offices in Chicago.

"Stuart is a leader on our defense," said Albany Conquest Head Coach Steve Matthews. "He is a sure tackler and has the ability to make big plays. Last year he had a breakout season and we expect great things from him this year," Coach Matthews added.

Stuart, a member of the Conquest since their inception into af2 in 2002, is the team's career tackles leader (118.5). He ranked fifth in af2 in both tackles (80) and passes broken up (34) in 2003. He was named ADT Defensive Player of the Game in a 69-35 win over the Cincinnati Swarm on May 10, 2003 when he had two interceptions, a fumble recovery, four passes broken up, and five tackles.

Stuart is the fourth defensive specialist to be assigned to the team, which opens training camp on March 25. Stuart joins Elijah Beamon (second on the team in tackles with 79.5 in 2003), Quincy Roe (assigned December 23 – played for Birmingham Steeldogs in 2003), and Travis Coleman (played cornerback for the Chicago Bears in 2002).

The Albany Conquest will play their home opener April 16 against the Manchester Wolves at 7:30 p.m. at the Pepsi Arena and will include performances by the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders. For ticket information, please call (518) 487-2222 or visit www.albanyconquest.com.
